News :: School reclaims its turf

From now on St Joseph's Primary School pupils will always feel green grass between their toes-drought or no drought.
The Kangaroo Point school last year decided to install synthetic grass to improve the safety of its pupils and escape the dirt and dust of many drought-ravaged school ovals.
Principal Carol Sayers said the grass replaced turf on the oval, preschool playground and leisure areas last September.
Mrs Sayers said teachers have noticed a marked decline in the number of children requireing first aid at lunchtime, with no rocks, stones or potholes causing children to fall and injure themselves during play.
"The synthetic grass areas allow continued usage in very dusty, drough conditions or during rainy periods when grounds are generally muddy and unusable," she said.
"Now most of the students exercies and physical activity is not interrupted by adverse weather donditions."
GroundAbility director and proGrass distributor, Warwick Beale, who installed the grass said the grounds were some of the worst he had seen, barren with barely a blade of grass and a thick layer of dust.
"We even found a hat buried in there - it looks great now," he said.
Mrs Sayers said it was one of the best decisions made towards the ongoing quality of the school environment in her 11 years as principal at the school.
